G.A.R. Hall was the meeting place for the Women's Relief Corp, Carpenter Post 65,
established after the Civil War. Their purpose was to promote healing after the
war and to further offer support to the soldiers and families of those that served.
The group held meetings at 110 Pearl Street from the early 1900's
until about 1960, at which point its membership dwindled. By the 1980's the building was in need of extensive renovation or faced demolition. Under the creative and meticulous guidance of Gare Maxton, GAR Hall was completely refurbished to reflect its original construction circa 1880. It gained historical status in 1990. Gare left no detail unattended as can be appreciated with the beautiful oak double entrance doors, large windows, old fashioned wood trim, beautiful antique light fixtures, and10' ceilings. The east wall and part of the west wall impressively exposes the original 1880's brick. When you visit GAR Hall, the 1880's charm and historical value come full circle with respect for the past, appreciation for the present and vision for the future. Ypsilanti is the 2nd largest historical district in Michigan. We hope you will find time to explore and enjoy the numerous historical buildings along Huron Street and throughout the community. Downtown conveniences are located nearby. It is a short walk to a variety of restaurants, Depot Town, Riverside Park, Frog Island, and EMU Campus. |
